How to disconnect
without closing your terminals
Disconnect and everything keeps running. Log off and MetaTrader closes. That difference is the whole of this page, and getting it wrong is how people come back to find an EA has not traded since Tuesday.
Know which one you are clicking
Disconnect leaves the session running on the server — your terminals stay open, your EAs keep trading, your charts stay as you left them. Log off ends the session and closes everything in it. The VPS itself stays on either way; the difference is what is running inside it.
In full screen, use the blue bar at the top
Move the mouse to the top of the screen and the connection bar appears. Click the X on the right, then OK. That is a disconnect, not a log off.
In a window, just close the window
Click the X on the Remote Desktop window itself and confirm. Same result.
Check it worked
Reconnect after a minute. Your terminals should be exactly where you left them, with the charts still updating.
Getting it wrong, and other questions
I clicked Start then Sign out — what happened?
That is a log off, and it closed your platforms. Reconnect and start them again. Nothing is damaged and no settings are lost, but any EA was not trading between the sign-out and now.
Does closing my laptop lid disconnect me?
Effectively yes, and that is fine — it is a disconnect rather than a log off. The session keeps running on the server.
What if my internet drops?
Also a disconnect. Your terminals carry on trading; only your view of them stops. This is the main reason a VPS is worth having.
Will an idle session be closed for me?
Not by us. It stays as you left it until you reconnect, reboot, or the server is restarted for maintenance — and maintenance is announced in advance.
I want everything to survive a reboot too
A disconnect survives a disconnect, but nothing survives a restart unless it is set to start itself. Auto-start takes two minutes to set up and is worth doing on day one.
