GitLab VPS

Self-hosted CI on a machine that can take it.

GitLab wants more memory than most people expect — their own documentation puts the floor at 4 GB, and a runner alongside it wants more. These are the three sizes worth ordering, and what each one is actually like to live with.

See the three sizes Which distribution?

From $8.92/mo on a yearly cycle · 4 GB, the realistic floor

Three sizes, because the other three will not run it.

GitLab needs four gigabytes before the installer finishes, and six once a runner joins it. These are the machines that clear that bar.

Every plan here undercuts its Windows counterpart — because there is no Microsoft licence inside it. That is the whole difference: same hardware, same cities, same support.

12 distributions. Here is when each one is right.

Any of them, on any plan, reinstallable from your panel in about five minutes.

Install something

Order to root

Ninety seconds, and none of it waiting on us.

Nothing is approved by hand and nothing is queued. The only slow part is you deciding which city.

01 Order

Pick 4, 6 or 8 GB

Below 4 GB the installer will not finish. Six is the size most people settle on once a runner joins.

0:00
02 Key

Paste your public key

We never set a root password unless you ask. The key is safer and takes the same ten seconds.

0:01
03 Build

The machine builds itself

Ninety seconds on a KVM guest with its own kernel. Nothing to approve, nobody to wait for.

0:02
04 Install

apt install gitlab-ce

Then set external_url and reconfigure. The first reconfigure takes several minutes — that part is GitLab, not the machine.

0:03

Nothing is preinstalled. A clean distribution and root is easier to trust, and easier to rebuild, than an image we have already changed.

In your panel, not in a ticket queue

Six tools you will use every week.

Buttons you press yourself, included on every plan — this one too. There are more than twenty in the panel; these are the ones that change the day.

Omnibus, not containers

The .deb package brings Postgres, Redis, Nginx and Puma with it. One install command, one config file, no compose stack to maintain.

01

Your own runners

Register as many as the machine takes. Docker executor, shell executor, or a runner on a second box — nothing is capped from our side.

02

The container registry

GitLab ships one. It needs disk rather than memory, which is why the plans below are sized on NVMe as much as RAM.

03

Backups you control

gitlab-backup runs to a path you choose. Snapshots sit alongside it, and both are yours rather than a support ticket.

04

SMTP and a real domain

Point an A record at the IP, run certbot, and GitLab issues its own mail. No proxy in front of it unless you want one.

05

Root, so upgrades are yours

Major version jumps need a specific order. On a shared kernel you would be asking permission; here you just run them.

06

Twenty more sit alongside them — reboots, graphs, hostname changes, Windows Update control, time zone sync. The cheapest machine has the same panel as the most expensive. See how each one works →

Before you spend anything.

The questions our support desk actually receives, answered plainly.

Their documentation puts the floor at 4 GB and says 8 GB suits most single-instance setups. Four works if it is only you and you accept swap; six is the size most people settle on once a runner is registered.
No. The installer will not finish. We list three sizes here rather than six for that reason — selling you a machine that cannot run the software helps neither of us.
Yes, and it is common. Budget the runner's memory on top of GitLab's own, which is the main argument for six gigabytes over four.
No. You get a clean distribution with full root, and the Omnibus package is one apt command away. An unmodified system is easier to trust than one we have already changed.
Either. Both install from the same repository, and the licence is between you and GitLab. We do not resell it.
Both work. They want disk more than memory, so watch the NVMe figure as much as the RAM one if you push large artefacts.
Yes, once a month at no charge. Forty-three locations, and your repositories come with you.

Latency around LD4 and Amsterdam is excellent — orders feel instant. We moved four accounts across and none of them noticed a thing.

Stable connection and quick help every time I have asked. Being next to the London hub is the whole reason my grid EA behaves now.

Excellent uptime and support is fast. It just works, which is all I wanted — I stopped thinking about the machine months ago.

Clear pricing and low latency. Migration was seamless — they moved the whole thing over a weekend and the renewal price has not moved since.

The Amsterdam route feels snappy and support solved my request quickly. Four stars only because I would like a German node closer to my broker.

Tokyo and Singapore peers are perfect for my brokers. Great value for what it is — I have run the same box for two years without touching it.
